Organised by the Technical Association of Roads, the first edition of the Sustainable and Resilient Roads Conference was held, bringing together the main players in the engineering and construction sector, and experts in sustainability and the environment, both from public and private sectors. The conference was held in Segovia at the end of February 2025, with the participation of experts from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, and from regional and local authorities.
The main objective of the conference was to discuss and share the challenges posed by climate change and new mobility needs, which make the need to develop sustainable and resilient road networks more crucial than ever.
TYPSA played a significant role, both as an active participant and as a sponsor. Nuria Mesonero, climate change coordinator, was part of the round table in the session entitled ‘Resilience of roads to climate change and experiences of recent flooding (DANA) in Spain’, in which she pointed out the importance of incorporating climate projections based on IPCC scenarios into road projects in order to introduce a forward-looking approach to the identification of climate risks.
She also highlighted the important role played by engineering consultancies in the adaptation of infrastructures by introducing new design criteria that increase resilience. Finally, she emphasised that economic barriers are being reduced thanks to the aid mechanisms of international climate finance lines.
