Light electric train in Guadalajara, Mexico, will be operational by the end of 2024

The Urban Electric Train System of the state of Jalisco, SITEUR, is carrying out the construction of the Light Rail Line 4, which will connect the municipalities of Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque and Tlajomulco de Zuniga, in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, a city of great population and importance in Mexico. This infrastructure will directly benefit 24 colonies, 9 industries, 18 educational centres, 2 health facilities and 5 centres specialised in commerce and services.

It is estimated that, at the start of its operations scheduled for the end of 2024, it will transport over 100,000 daily users, enjoying universal accessibility. The line will be fully electrified, with zero CO₂ emissions and rolling stock similar to the other three lines currently operating on the Urban Electric Train system.

The project is being carried out in EPC mode, and TYPSA Group, through its subsidiary MEXTYPSA, has been contracted to supervise the detailed design and the execution of the works, undertaken by the ‘Consorcio Tren Ligero Linea 4 Guadalajara’ formed by the companies Mota Engil Mexico and CRRC.

This project involves a complete transformation of mobility and the generation of a better quality of life for hundreds of thousands of people, through an efficient means of transport, reducing travel time and improving safety. The 21.2km long line will be covered in approximately 35 minutes.

The work consists of a double-track railway line that runs parallel to an existing freight track, and will be served by a light electric train, with 8 stations, several vehicular level crossings, 8 elevated vehicular crossings, 12 pedestrian bridges and 26 hydraulic crossings. The project also includes a shunting and maintenance yard containing 15 buildings including workshops, depots and offices.

At the beginning of September 2023, the work already has a made significant progress in sections of track, stations and foundations of the yard buildings and workshops, so it seems feasible that by the end of 2024 it will be in operation.
