Following five years of work, the Boulenouar wind farm, located in the Dajlet Nouadibu region, west of Mauritania, was inaugurated last December.
The construction is part of the Mauritanian government´s strategy to provide all citizens with access to electricity, reduce costs, promote industrial and economic transformation, and harness the country’s natural resources through the intensive use of renewable energies. The aim is to diversify the national energy matrix, reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, and thus contributing to environmental protection.
Mauritania´s coastline, extending over several hundred kilometres, is characterised by its significant wind potential. Thus, this wind farm not only contributes to meeting domestic energy needs, but also facilitates the export of surplus energy to neighbouring countries, with the consequent economic benefit for the nation.
The wind farm consists of 39 turbines with a unit power of 2.625 MW, resulting in a total installed power of 100 MW, and also includes a substation and a medium-voltage line to connect with the Nouakchott-Nuadibu line. Promoted by the Société Mauritanienne d’Électricité (SOMELEC), the project was built under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model by a consortium formed by Elecnor and Siemens-Gamesa. TYPSA, in consortium with the Mauritanian consultancy MCG, provided owner´s engineering services, including project management, detailed engineering review, construction supervision, and training of client staff.
The cost of the project amounts to approximately 122 million euros, co-financed by the State of Mauritania, the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the OPEC Fund for International Development.
The inauguration was presided over by the Prime Minister of Mauritania, Mr. Mohamed Ould Bilal Messaoud, and attended by the Minister of Oil, Mines and Energy, along with various dignitaries representing entities associated with the project. Representatives from TYPSA, its Mauritanian partner and the contractor, were also present.
This project is of great significance for TYPSA, positioned as a leading engineering firm in the field of renewable energies, both in the country and throughout Francophone Africa.
