TYPSA at the National Environmental Congress (CONAMA)

The National Environmental Congress (CONAMA) was held in December 2024. This event has been held since 1992 and brings together the key players operating in the environmental sector, with the aim of promoting dialogue and addressing issues related to sustainability and the environment. Administrations, companies, universities, research centres, environmental and social organisations and unions meet at the congress to promote social change towards sustainability.

TYPSA had an outstanding presence at the congress, with the participation of Nuria Mesonero, from the Sustainability and Environmental Assessment Division, at the technical session called “Climate Risk Assessment. Analysis of infrastructure adaptation to climate change”.  During this session she had the opportunity to interact with relevant participants, both at European and national levels MITECO, EIB, ADIF, DGC, APV, OECC, EEA, and in which she highlighted the urgent need to implement adaptation strategies that guarantee the sustainability and resilience of our infrastructures in the face of increasingly frequent extreme weather.

Nuria presented the success story of the Flower Corridor, in Xóchi, Guatemala. This project funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, demonstrates the effective tools for defining vulnerability and risk, and shows that multidisciplinary technical criteria are key to designing grounded measures to ensure resilience. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of a good cost-benefit analysis to ensure that the initial investment involved in implementing adaptation measures is amortized throughout the useful life of the project. Such results include reducing maintenance costs, the cost of cessation of activity and recovery in the event of extreme events, especially if the integration of nature-based solutions (NBS) is prioritised.

Colleagues from various areas and disciplines attended the different sessions and presentations at the congress and were present at TYPSA´s stand, continuing to constantly learn and update aspects related to the world of water, planning, landscaping, biodiversity, social impact, corporate sustainability and new regulations, among others, which will undoubtedly continue in future editions.
