Key facts

Total length of 700 m and a 400 m main span, it will be the longest bridge span and the first cable stayed bridge in Bangladesh.

Located on a River Meghna branch, that meets the River Ganges downstream from the bridge site, it is navigable for vessels up to 10,000 DWT. The bridge is subject to stringent design constraints as it is located in a typhoon region, with winds close to 300 km/h, as well as both the earthquake and the expectable scour, reaching depths of 40 m. The geology of almost the entire country is governed by the water flow of the Meghna, Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers in the world’s largest river delta, with deep sandy deposits.

The pylons foundations consist of steel driven piles, 2,5 m in diameter, reaching 90 m depth.

The deck is a pre-stressed concrete element with two box girders connected by transverse ribs. Stayed cables are distributed in a semi-fan arrangement at 12 m spacings in the main span. The pylons, diamond-shaped with a central mast, are 100 m high above the deck, and about 130 m from the foundations.
