Bilbao Ría 2000 selects the winning design in the Call for Ideas for Ribera de Barakaldo Park.
The company BILBAO Ría 2000 organised a Panel of Judges to evaluate the ideas submitted for the urban design of the estuary waterfront and the Ribera del Nervión Park in the Galindo Este (Barakaldo) area. The winning design, submitted by the ‘Burgos & Garrido Arquitectos – TYPSA’ JV, was selected from the five finalist teams. Since the company Bilbao Ría 2000 was created in 1992, TYPSA has built up a reputation for its notable success in collaborating closely in the regeneration and transformation of deteriorated areas in the metropolitan area of Bilbao.
In the Panel’s opinion, the winning project, submitted under the pseudonym ‘The Garden in Motion’, is ‘a versatile proposal, fresh and inspired by nature’ and is the one that ‘best achieves the vision of a more flexible natural environment to accommodate medium- and long-term uses’. Among the highlights of this project the Panel cites ‘the smooth approach to the different levels’ in the area and ‘the clear, continuous and diaphanous public space generated’, ‘the ease with which the proposal connects with the history and industrial past’ of the area and ‘the natural way in which the park runs alongside the course of the Estuary’. The JV’s past experience working to develop the Manzanares park in Madrid has been a help.
As the competition winners, the JV will be in charge of preparing the concept design for the urban development of the Estuary waterfront and will provide design and construction supervision services for the Ribera del Nervión Park.
